Asbestos Abatement – Rooftop
The likely presence of asbestos is a significant factor in every commercial roofing estimate. This is true whether for a re-cover or a complete tear-off and replacement. Since asbestos was recognized as a health hazard more than 100 years ago, governments have implemented numerous protective laws and regulations. Painstaking attention to those directives is critically important to both commercial enterprises and public health.
Spokane Roofing Company is fully certified by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) in asbestos removal. Every employee involved in abatement undergoes extensive training. Annual refresher courses maintain required credentials.
CSL Plasma Center – Asbestos Abatement & Roof Replacement
One of SRC‘s recent abatement projects was for CSL Plasma Center in Spokane, WA. It is relocating to a commercial building that required a new roof. Flagship Corporation of Atlanta contacted SRC, after receiving a referral from a local roofing supplier. This was a full asbestos abatement project.
Local asbestos removal regulations are very restrictive. The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency (SRCAA) is diligent in its examination of every facet of the abatement process.
The removal methods used in abatement depend upon the amount of asbestos in a roof. Appropriate protective gear is always required. That generally involves full Tyvek suits and respirators. During the removal process, asbestos must be wrapped, contained, and transported to a designated landfill. Spokane Roofing Company contracts with Waste Management for appropriate disposal.
The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986 required use of trained and accredited professionals in asbestos inspections. Spokane Roofing Company owner Jeff Sitton is proud of his company’s compliance with every stipulation of that law.
We are fully certified by all the accrediting agencies for projects specific to roofing. Our employees are knowledgeable about every step of the process. Asbestos abatement is a huge issue as commercial buildings age. We are very interested in growing our abatement business. – Jeff Sitton, Spokane Roofing Company
SRC partners with several local businesses in its asbestos abatement projects. Among them are IRS Environmental, which specializes in lead and asbestos removal, and Kyron Environmental, Inc., which provides high quality environmental and training services to its clients.
Building those partnerships remains critical to the success of SRC’s asbestos abatement roofing projects. Sitton says his company is capable of managing these projects from start to finish. Knowledge of all regulations and enforcement agencies at every level-local, state, and federal-is essential in the provision of reliable service to clients. Many commercial roofing clients often are unaware their roofs contain asbestos.
Sitton helps his clients to decide whether a re-cover or tear-off is most appropriate. The process starts with core cuts to analyze roof samples and an examination by structural engineers. All abatements involving asbestos removal must be approved by the Department of Labor and Industries and SRCAA.
On the CSL Plasma Center project, Sitton worked with general contractor Mattcon Construction of Indianapolis, Indiana. The building was formerly occupied by a longtime restaurant. In Sitton’s words, there was asbestos everywhere. Air pollution regulations added another element to the abatement process. Spokane Roofing used Festool High Efficiency Particulate Air dust extractors, supplied by Spokane Power Tool, to assure compliance.
