5 Tips To Get Your Home Ready For Fall

Spokane Home Showing Roof And Gutters To Make Ready For Fall

Did your summer fly by? Are those little projects on the to do list you created last spring still waiting for you to do them? That means it is time to take advantage of the nice weather to tackle a few jobs around the house. These five quick tips will save you bigger problems and money when the seasons change.

  1. CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS

Rain gutters pitched at the wrong angle can overflow and can threaten your basement. Properly pitched gutters slope between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch per foot, directing water to the leader and out the downspout. Check the pitch with a level, holding it even with the gutter. On longer runs, run water from your hose into the gutter and check the direction of the flow.

  2. CHECK FOR LOOSE ROOFING

Look for shingles that are buckling, curling, or blistering, all of which indicate the end of the shingle’s life expectancy. Check for loose material or wear around roof penetrations such as chimneys, pipes, vents, and flashing. Look for excessive amounts of shingle granules in your gutters; granules give shingles added weight and protect them from damaging UV rays.

  3. REPLACE YOUR FURNACE FILTER

This is easy to do, but it is easier to forget! As much as half the energy used in your home is from your heating and cooling system. Proper maintenance not only prolongs its life but also has a significant impact on both your utility bills and your comfort. Check furnace filters every month, especially during the winter and summer months, when your system is used the most. Filters should be changed at least once every three months. It is always a good idea to spend a couple dollars more for a quality filter-you will get your money’s worth.

  4. CHECK FOR HOLES IN YOUR ATTIC

Look for streams of light entering the attic through the roof or sheathing. You may be able to fix small leaks or gaps yourself, using closed-cell polyurethane foam for sheathing gaps or caulking small roof leaks with a UV-resistant sealant that is compatible with asphalt shingles. Larger leaks may require the services of a professional roofing contractor. Advice and repairs are always available from your roofing company.

  5. WEATHERPROOF WINDOWS AND DOORS

Seal gaps around windows and doors to cut your winter heating bill by up to 15%. If you are sealing a window, press adhesive-backed, closed-cell foam onto the bottom of the sash. Secure a loose sash by applying a strip of plastic V-channel weather-stripping into the groove, securing it with finish nails. Use foam strips on the sides and tops of doors, and install a door sweep on the bottom.

Finally, stay safe! You will notice that a number of those tips put you on a ladder or on your roof, and that is not for everybody. If you prefer professional help, do not hesitate to call Spokane Roofing Company at 509-838-8633 for an inspection and free estimate.
